Dr. William Dernell graduated with a DVM from the University of Illinois in 1985 after completion of a BS in animal Science and Pre-veterinary Science from Utah State University. He entered private mixed practice, followed by small animal general and emergency practice in Colorado, then pursued a small animal surgical residency and MS degree at Washington State University, obtaining diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1994. Following two, separate one-year oncology fellowships through the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University he joined the faculty there as a surgical oncologist from 1995 until 2007, moving from assistant to associate professor. He then returned to WSU, accepting the position of Professor and Chair, Veterinary Clinical Sciences from 2008 through 2018 when he accepted the position of Associate Dean of Student and Academic Affairs. In 2020 he then took the position of Director of external Clinical Training Programs; focusing on management of the external 4th year DVM program. Dr, Dernell is the author of over 160 scientific papers, has a history of high-level research funding and has presented numerous invited presentations and abstracts throughout his career.
