Meet the Veterinary Teaching Hospital team: Megan Foster

Megan Foster with her family.

Megan Foster has been helping to ensuring pets get the best care and are kept safe as a pharmacist at the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital for the past two years. Originally from Ellensburg, Washington, Megan earned both her bachelor’s and pharmacy degrees at WSU.

She shares her home with her husband, Ryan; two children, Raymond, 5, and Helen, 3; and their two dogs, Phoenix, 12, and Tucker, 11.

What is your typical day like at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital?

I spend my day reviewing submitted prescriptions, verifying dosing safety, looking for drug interactions, and ensuring the prescriptions have all the necessary information. I also go track down doctors and students when I have questions about the prescriptions. Then we fill the prescription and I verify it was filled correctly and has all the pieces to make administration easy. We also spend time teaching the fourth-year vet students clinical pearls and helping them to be successful and safe veterinarians upon graduation.

What made you want to work in veterinary medicine and at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital?

While I never expected to find myself in vet med, being back in Pullman and the work-life balance here was a major draw.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I love teaching the students, residents, and interns and helping them learn. I especially enjoy doing and teaching CRI (constant rate infusion) math.

What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

I plan on staying here until I retire, but I hope to retire within the next 10 years. I’ve considered becoming a birth doula as a second career, as I believe being supported during birth and post-partum is very important for maternal health.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to read (mostly audiobooks), build Lego sets, travel (with and without my kids), and be outdoors, especially whitewater rafting and hiking.

What advice would you give to pet owners?

Don’t hesitate to ask the pharmacists questions about your pet meds!
